Your First Session

aka

Session 0

  • Every campaign begins with creating and fine-tuning your fully-playable character, immersing yourself in and establishing your character within the world, and setting shared expectations for the journey to come. We call this crucial initial meet-up before the adventure begins Session 0. We’ll introduce ourselves and discuss your party’s goals for and expectations from the game as well as character ideas. I’ll provide some background information about the setting and then we’ll create your party’s characters. We’ll end with discussing your party’s consent forms, described below.

  • Yes:
A pencil (or a pen, but you’ll be erasing quite a bit)
At least one set of polyhedral dice (extras available if needed)
Anything that helps keep you engaged
    Your creativity

    Possibly:
A fantasy archetype or character concept you like
Access to the Player’s Handbook (house copy provided)
A character sheet (if already familiar with character creation)

  • What aspect of the game do you enjoy most? What kind of tone do you want for your game? Is good and evil clear-cut in your world or are there gray areas? How high-stakes do you want your game to be? We’ll answer these questions and a few more to ensure you’re having the most fun possible while you’re at the table.

  • A story needs a world that reacts to the main characters and that possesses a history for them to effect. Your GM will lay out important information about the larger world that your characters inhabit as well as the region local to your adventure. We’ll discuss the context of your adventure, including any big players involved and what spurs the party into action. We’ll use this information to embed your party’s characters within the world and give them clear motivations and goals.

  • Creating the heroes of our story is the meat of Session 0. Guided by your GM, you’ll craft your own custom Dungeons and Dragons character — selecting their species and class, rolling dice for their ability scores, equipping them, and more. We’ll brainstorm about your character’s background: what was their life like? how did they get to where they are now? why did they decide to be an adventurer?

  • When you reserve your first session, you’ll receive an email with an attached Consent in Gaming fillable PDF. These forms will be used to avoid any subjects that players may find upsetting or triggering before they’re brought up in play. We’ll discuss the boundaries around any topics flagged as yellow as well as going over the hard line topics that will not be appearing in play. Names will not be involved and individual information is strictly confidentia.
